Right now most gyms have been closed down due to Covid-19, however, eventually all gyms will reopen (sigh of relief) and when they do reopen, being equipped with more gym etiquette tips will help you enjoy the gym and see better results!
If you are a newcomer to the gym environment, these rules may be new to you, however, if you’re a seasoned veteran, this will be a refresher course. And yes, rules were made for all environments including the gym!
Know the Rules!
After spending many years in the gym, you become aware of what is acceptable and what is not. There are spoken and unspoken rules at the gym and now that you are going to be a part of this culture, it is important that you learn proper gym etiquette.
The gym rules are as follows:
7 Rules For Fit Girls
Rule 1: Don’t Sit In the Sauna without Clothes On
We are all women, but there is something very awkward about having someone in the nude right in front of you doing things that most people would consider private. Being comfortable in your own skin is great, however, be aware that there are other people who may not feel comfortable with you walking around in the nude. Embrace your body, but please put a towel on.
Rule 2: Don’t Use Bathroom Stalls to Change Clothes
The bathroom should be used just for what it has been created for. If you are uncomfortable changing in front of other people it’s understandable, but please don‘t change in the bathroom stall. Doing this holds the line up when other people need to use the restroom. Please be considerate and go into the shower area or other private designated area and change. Normally there is more space in these areas, and you will not hold up the restrooms.
Rule 3: No Perfume Overload
There is a time and place for everything, but wearing heavy amounts of perfume to the gym is definitely not the right time nor place. Instead of using heavy perfumes that may affect other people, try a light body spray or essential oils.
Rule 4: No Machine Hoarding
Depending on the time of day, the gym can become overly crowded. If this is the case, you may have to share equipment with other people. If this happens, be open and willing to share. If you are working on a machine and taking a rest, allow someone else to use the machine during your rest time. Be friendly and respectful to everyone and if you are not using a machine, do not sit and talk on the machine. This hinders other people from using the machine.
Rule 5: Do Not Interrupt
It is an unspoken rule, but a very important one. Do not interrupt someone during a set or while they are in the middle of lifting weights. If someone is in the middle of lifting weights or performing an exercise, wait until they are done before you interrupt them. It is rude and can break someone‘s focus if you speak to them while they are executing a movement. If you need to ask a question, wait until that person has completed their set. If they are not finished, do not stand and wait. Walk away and come back when they are finished.
Rule 6: No Cell Phone On the Gym Floor
Cell phones can be a huge distraction to you and others. Talking on the phone while working out can be dangerous and annoying to others around you. Therefore, if you need to talk, find a quiet place in the gym to excuse yourself. Some gyms do not allow members to talk on cell phones. If you train at a gym that has this rule, respect this rule and set an example to others. If you are allowed to use your cell phone, keep in mind that other people come to the gym to de-stress and loud conversations on your cell phone can be disturbing.
Rule 7: Make a Mess, Clean Your Mess
It is unhealthy to leave your sweat on machines, mats or other equipment. Hundreds of people train at the gym and leave behind bacteria and certain viruses on a daily basis. Therefore, in order to help prevent the spread of germs and avoid getting sick, wipe down your equipment after each EVERY use. If there isn‘t any cleaner available, don‘t be afraid to ask gym staff to provide you with some antibacterial cleaner.

The gym is a place where people come for various reasons. Nonetheless, when you’re there, remember everyone deserves to enjoy their gym experience and reach their individualized fitness goals.
