Description
Why is Black Women’s Health Outcomes a Concern?
African-American women experience some of the highest rates of preventable chronic illness in the United States:
- Over 50% of Black women live with hypertension or are at high risk
- Nearly 4 out of 5 Black women are classified as overweight or obese
- Black women experience higher mortality rates from breast and cervical cancer, often due to later diagnosis
- Chronic stress—linked to racism, caregiving, economic strain, and workplace pressure—directly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and metabolic illness
These outcomes are not because Black women don’t care.
They are often the result of:
- Limited access to quality healthcare
- Economic barriers
- Medical bias and mistrust
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Lack of culturally relevant health education
This is a systems issue—not a personal failure.
And that’s exactly why Changing the Norm exists.
We’re Changing This Norm
To address health disparities and Black women, we created, “Changing the Norm Wellness program”. CTN wellness program is a 6-week online health education and wellness program created specifically for African-American women.
It is designed to:
- Inform Black women about health conditions that disproportionately affect them
- Educate them on how to reduce risk and prevent chronic illness
- Empower Black women to become confident advocates for their own health
- Teach Black women how to move more, eat healthier, stress less
- Help Black women navigate healthcare systems that don’t listen to their health needs
